Science Summary

This project supports the training of U.S. Ice Core Drilling Program (IDP) drillers on the agile Eclipse and Foro 400 drills at Summit Station, Greenland. The U.S. Ice Drilling Program (IDP) was established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to lead integrated planning for ice coring and drilling and provision of drills and drilling services. There is a critical need for skilled drillers on agile drilling projects and training is essential. By combining this training with an in-situ science project in Greenland, efficiencies in logistics will be utilized.

Logistics Summary

This U.S. Ice Core Drilling Program (IDP) training project will support the training of drillers on site in Greenland on the Eclipse and Foro 400 drills in summer of 2024. IDP will send staff and drills to Summit Station, where they will learn and practice how to use the drills, gain electromechanical coring experience, and thus become trained in order to do drilling in support of science projects in the coming years.

In mid-June of 2024, two drillers will travel to Kangerlussuaq and on to Summit Station via the Air National Guard. They will spend approximately one month training on their drills and working alongside the drillers on site in support of the Saltzman project (NSF grant 2243540), using the 700 Drill.

Battelle ARO will provide transportation for passengers and cargo via the Air National Guard, lodging in Kangerlussuaq, Summit Station user days, generators and fuel. All other support and logistics will be arranged and paid for by the project.
